From Abdul Abou-Samra, MD, PhD, Division Chief: On behalf of the faculty and administrative staff I welcome you to the web page of our division. Our MISSION is to 1) provide quality patient care to the multi-ethnic diverse population of the metropolitan Detroit and surrounding areas; 2) motivate and inspire innovative clinical and basic research in endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism and bone biology; and 3) prepare our trainees to become academic physicians/scientists and future leaders of endocrine research, education and practice.
Our clinical and academic offices are housed at the University Health Center (UHC) within the Detroit Medical Center (DMC); and our research laboratories are within the nearby educational and research facilities of Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Our clinical faculty are board certified with specialized interests in thyroid, metabolic bone diseases, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and general endocrinology.
Our research faculty includes a highly talented group of researchers with extensive research backgrounds, with leadership in research at the different departments of Wayne State University School of Medicine. Our research faculty contributes to the Endocrine Grand Rounds and to the mentoring of our students and fellows. We use molecular, biochemical and cell biological techniques as well as transgenic animals in our endocrine research. Endocrine research is performed by both physician scientists (M.D.s) and basic scientists (Ph.D.s) working side by side as one research team. Research is highly encouraged and supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Wayne State University Medical School, and the pharmaceutical industry.
The Endocrine Division welcomes applications from motivated potential trainees and potential faculty who subscribe to the mission of the division. We provide an outstanding training environment that arms the trainees with rounded clinical and research skills in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. We offer our faculty a competitive academic package and start-up research funds.
International medical students, residents or fellows may apply for observership through the General Medical Education office. The Endocrine Division does not process these applications directly.
